The Big Island Ukulele Guild’s “Ukes Only: A Mini Concert” is set for 6-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at Hilo Shark’s Coffee.
The evening will include a drawing for a free ukulele and performances by Tiana Malone Jennings, Volcano School seventh-grader Jade Malia, Mike Perdue and others.
This evening is in celebration of the Ukulele Guild’s 10th annual Handmade Instruments Exhibit at Wailoa Center throughout the month of October. The show formally opens Friday, Oct. 3, with a reception from 5-8 p.m. A drawing for a free ukulele also will take place at the opening.
The Ukulele Guild is comprised of members from across the island who build by hand either recreationally or professionally. The mission of the guild is to share and promote the art and tradition of ukulele making as it continues to evolve in modern day.
The exhibit, which features more than 40 handmade ukuleles, also will be complemented by ceramic work by Volcano artist Tim Freeman, whose large pit-fired vessels are partially inspired by the volcano.
Throughout October, these events will accompany the show from noon-3 p.m. Saturdays:
• Oct. 4, Kanikapila with Alan Hale.
• Oct. 11, ukulele-building demonstration.
• Oct. 18, Kanikapila with Andy Andrews and Mike Perdue.
